Day 23: Wed Sep 28

The previous day, I had driven far, had a very late checkout, and then handled a work emergency. I didn’t feel like doing much today.

My hotel is located within a mile of Temple Square, so at my leisure, I took a walk. Like its neighboring suburbs, Salt Lake City is impressive, oddly quiet, well-laid-out, and easy to navigate. The Temple Square area is also where the mind-boggling Family History Library is located, staffed by a million and a half dedicated volunteers.

The Church History Museum’s First Vision Theatre presented a brief retelling of Brigham Young’s experiences in an “immersive, cinematic theater on a 240-degree semicircular screen.” Guys, after experiencing this technology, you would not want to go back to iMax or other 3D delivery systems. Wow, well done!

I notice that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints invests in the education, not only of their own community, but all of us. I could have gone the whole day without paying a cent for all sorts of museums. But when I passed a donation-run (I didn’t know until I entered) museum, I went there too, and paid gladly. If I were a young artist in SLC, I would want to have multiple patrons, not just the church. Glad to support local artists!
