Day 14: Mon Sep 19

On my agenda today were Durango, CO and Mesa Verde National Park. Tried as I might, I didn’t learn enough about Durango to know what to expect to see. I kept an open mind during the drive from Monte Vista, CO.

I did stop at Durango. It looked big and touristy enough to supply me with cappuccino. But I was wrong, no cappuccino. So I left, as there was nothing to draw me in, at the moment. Except this funky house, check it out!

I continued to Mesa Verde National Park, on which I had done very little homework. I hit the visitor center moments before it closed. Then I found out how much time is actually needed to accomplish a visit (a lot!). Not wanting to risk driving after dark, I decided to enjoy a grapefruit snack at the parking lot and come back the next day for a proper visit.

I continued to Cortez, CO where I had a room reserved. With plenty of time on my hands—yes, I could have made some headway on this blog, but didn’t—I looked for a place to grab a bite and a drink. My internet research led me to the Loungin’ Lizard, within walking distance of my hotel. As I walked over there, I also checked out each eatery and bar on the way. The Lizard was definitely the right choice for me as far as ambiance and eclectic food options.

I met the nicest and most interesting people at that bar. Cheetara was seated next to me. She is so sweet and naturally warm, I’ll bet she has no idea how uncomfortable and awkward I can often be in public. We just chatted like two old friends. And when her beau walked in and I saw the warmth between them—well, I kinda platzed. What can I say!

Cheetara recommended the spinach salad, which is just what I needed after my weeks of high fruit and protein, but low veggies. And let me tell you, these guys know how to make a salad. It was so scrumptious, I ordered a second salad for dessert.
