A recurring phenomenon in Athens (possibly all of Greece?) is that nothing is etched in stone if it did not originate during the Golden Age. I researched the big names and performances I wanted to see. Saturday night is a prime day for most shows. But somehow I found myself looking for a replacement activity when my original plan did not pan out.
No worries, I’m in the center of Athens and many alternatives are within walking distance, including Xilies kai Dio Nyxtes, a rembetiko joint that adds a double bass to its traditional repertoire. The taverna is intimate, and with an excellent selection of food. As I said on a previous post, it’s not as easy as you might think to find traditional Greek cuisine these days, and Xilies is no exception. I am told that the place was owned by a Kurdish immigrant. The food was tasty, highly recommended, and all new to me.
